SPA Induction Course - Part 2

the following is a summary of what happened during our induction course.

Date : 20th until 23rd September 2011
Venue : Hotel Impian Morib

Day 1 - registration started as early as 2pm. We found out that we could choose our own roommate. However married couples are not allowed to stay in together. A bit weird though. Then at 4.30pm, we had our briefing and icebreaking session. we were divided into 7 Groups and each was given with group task. The night ended about 11pm, after the results of our placement were officially released. Alhamdulillah, I got Hospital Miri with 2 of my other friends.

Day 2 and Day 3 - started the day with breakfast as early as 7am. To those who were not satisfied with the given hospital and appealed for a new placement, they had to submit the appeal letter by 10am. Then the day was filled with various talks and meals which ended until 10.30pm each day.

Mind you, the meals provided were 6 times daily! Everyone was happy with the quality of the food though. Since the place was also provided with swimming pool, some took the dinner break to have a swim. otherwise, you just need to sit in the seminar room and listen to the various talks which basically informed us about our roles as a government servant.

Day 4 - we had exit exam at 9.30am. Format was in MCQ and Short Essay Question. None touched on medical background; it is more on topics that we should be aware of as a government servant. Then the day ended with the performances for our Group Tasks. Since we are already used to perform and present a lot during our medical school, we didnt have much problems in completing it. Before Friday prayer, we officially ended our course. To those who reappealed, results would only be revealed by this time.

other thing that worth mentioning : bring day and night wear for the seminar. at night, you can wear collared tshirt with pants.

8 shout outs!:

hi.. i'm catherina, a med student graduating soon. i've to start applying for placement of housemanship. i was googling for hospitals of choice and came across your blog. i'm interested in sarawak hospitals, but don't want really small ones. i was thinking of hospital miri, tapi x pasti pula if it's the best choice. why did you choose miri ya? is doing ho-ship in sarawak better than semenanjung? hmm, how many of you actually got your 1st choices? i thought of putting semenanjung hospitals and sarawak hospitals in the choices but seniors said sure dapat sarawak punya kalau macam tu. thanks for reading this anyway. reply soon pls sebab dah serabut. :)

Hello catherine.

Well, i am doing tagging now in O&G day 3. So far me and my friends are happy with our choices. Though busy but we are grateful to have such wonderful staff around; nurses, senior HOs, sisters, specialists. Never heard them yelled or scream at you. But they do tegur if you make mistakes but in a nice way. They are willing to help u if u ask them.

I chose Miri because they said if you stay at KLang valley, they will send you elsewhere after the 2 years. And then i am comfortable with bandar Miri. So i kick myself first to Miri and then i heard my seniors cakap, Sabah Sarawak have friendly staffs.

So far my day 3 tagging is tiring but since they are helpful, we feel okay. Here, you get to do many procedures. No rgrets so far. Let me know if you are coming. I need housemate. Hahaha if you have any enquiries, you can let me know. Goodluck!! far me and my friends are happy with our choices. thanks for the reply! wow, miri sounds really great! busy and get to do lots of procedure means can learn a lot more. so i don't mind busy. they said klang valley hospitals congested with HOs, so memang cannot do lots of things. but more variety of cases seen. hmm, how is the patient load in miri? byk ke?

hmm how bout number of housemen? kalau still insufficient, easier for placement approval. and friendly staff is certainly a plus point. now med student pun kena marah teruk tanpa sebab by the nurses in hospitals here. then i guess consultants in miri pun byk ajar kn? miri sounds good. :)

Hey catherine,

My day 6 in Labour room. Patient load depends on the day. Monday and friday the busiest. It can be busy but ive learnt a lot. The nurses and doctors want you to be fast as well as skillful. Here has no shft system yet. In october i'll be doing 8 times of oncalls. If you dont mind busy place, come then! Ifyou choode Miri, you'll drfinitely get it. 100% guaranteed. We dont have enough HO. better if you can find your colleagues instead of coming here alone.

hey hanani,

thanks for the swift reply. so far i guess im the only one interested in miri hospital. haha. oh so when is shift system gonna be implemented in miri hosp? i heard my seniors said they actually preferred oncalls system, so i guess i don't mind doing oncalls. so you've done many procedures already?

Hey catherine,

As of to date, there will be no shift system in Miri Hospital. Dont think there will be any for a LONGGGG time since we do not have enough Housemen. I myself will have 8 oncalls in October alone! Moneywise, you will get extra and oh, not forgetting, the Wilayah Allowance. Hehee you will get extra rm1k per month than those in KL. hehehe

Since I am in Labour Room, ive done ARM, assisted in caesar, and we could also use the ultrasound machine! It can be VERY busy though not because of the patients load but more due to not having enough Housemen.

Otherwise, i just need to inform you that Miri Town is not like KL but we do have McDs, Pizza Hut, Sushi King, Parkson, Giant, Body Shop. Sounds an already good town for me! Hey catherine,

hi hanani,

yup, i've researched how miri town is like and i think i'll be contented. haha.. hmm since shift system is not yet implemented, can we claim for the oncalls? over here, some seniors said shift system hasn't been implemented and yet they cannot claim for their oncalls already - they get the rm600 shift sys allowance. so how's work so far? how many beds/wards for o&g in miri hosp? how many do you need to cover?

Hello there again.

The no of patients in Miri is not that crazy but because we are lacking of housemen, it's gonna be a busy life for u. As of for O&G, there are 2 maternity wards, 1 gynae ward, 1 labour room. Labour room can entertain 10 patients at one time. There are usually about 20 deliveries per day.

There are 3 operation theatres altogether for the whole hospital. So far there will be no A&E postings for the Housemanship but hey, anything can happen within the 2 years. The last posting will be anaesth.

Since we dont have shift systems, we get oncall allowances. Depending on the number of housemen in the dept, one might do as much as 10 oncalls each month!! U might earn rm1000 extra but i think it's gonna be tiring. I dont think we will even have time to spend money on it!

My advice for now is to recruit as many friends as you can to the hospital. It can be prettty lonely without your friends to share your frustration with! Furthermore, the more the better our housemanship will be. No EOD calls!!
